Favorite Films of 2015

Overdue, I know, but I felt it necessary to publish my favorite list for 2015.  These are not the “best” films, but they are the ones I liked the most. These are in order of when I saw them.

  1. The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel – A sequel to the original film, this one has a cast of actors who deserve to be in more movies. I offer it as proof.
  2. The Seven Five – a documentary about corruption in the NYPD, as told by the people who committed the crimes. It plays chronologically, and is quite effective.
  3. Mad Max: Fury Road – Yet another sequel in the Mad Max storyline, with a slightly different focus – women who save themselves.
  4. Inside Out – Pixar releases yet another winner that pulls on your heartstrings.
  5. Train Wreck – Amy Schumer’s first major movie, starring and written by her.
  6. Mr. Holmes – Sir Ian McKellan stars as an elderly version of the famous detective, trying to solve the one case he couldn’t.
  7. Freeheld – the dramatization of a true story of a lesbian police detective in New Jersey that became a bellwether of change for LGBT rights in the USA.
  8. The Martian – Another dramatization of a book, about the struggle of an astronaut left to survive on Mars after he’s presumed dead by his team.
  9. Room – yet another dramatic interpretation of a novel. A mother and child struggle to survive being imprisoned, and their struggle to overcome the aftermath.
  10. Star Wars: The Force Awakens – essentially a retelling of Star Wars: A New Hope, but for the next generation. It was a return to the moviemaking of the original movies, with depth and weight.
